What Makes A Human Dna Can Make Us Better, Or Hurt Us
Deoxyribonucleic acid (Dna) is usually referred to as what makes us the way we are. It is what makes every single living organism as it is. Most animals that we think of as extinct, aren t really extinct. Most animals have simply evolved to fit their environment. Humans, as all eukaryotic organisms, have cells with a nucleus. Inside of this nucleus, we have our DNA that makes these changes possible. It can come from mutations all the way to artificial selection. These ââ¬Å"changesâ⬠in our DNA can make us better, or hurt us. But what if there was a way to modify our DNA, to manually adjust our genome to help us as a species. I believe that modification of organismsââ¬â¢ genome will overall benefit us. We have actually been doing this for over 10,000 years. ââ¬Å"Hunter-gatherers began to keep flocks and herds and to cultivate cereals and other plants.â⬠(West, Brian R., 2002) This means that we have selectively bred livestock for their best traits. There is a cattle breed called the Belgian Blue that has been bred with the genetic defect of having their muscle grow two times the size of an average cow. We have also bred dogs through selective breeding. Golden Retrievers for hunting, German Shepherds for obedience, or a Shih Tzu to be cute. There are many more animals bred for better traits like chickens, pigs, etc. Animals arenââ¬â¢t the only thing we ve done this to, humans have selectively bred plants to get bigger, sweeter, and more nutritional. Examples Of Sonnet Poems - 803 Words
William Shakespeare Sonnet Poems William Shakespeare has wrote many plays, stories, and poems in his lifetime. William Shakespeare lived for 52 years, and in his lifetime he wrote 38 plays, his series on Sonnet poems, and 5 other poems. He is the most popularly read author right behind the Bible. The sonnets he wrote were always 14 lines, and they all have the same amount of syllables. So, if you wanted, you can actually sing every single sonnet to a melody. The two sonnets I chose have to do with expressing your own beauty and passing the beauty on. In Sonnet 1, Shakespeare wrote, ââ¬Å"From fairest creatures we desire increase, That thereby beautyââ¬â¢s rose might never die, But as the riper should by time decease, His tender heir might bearâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦You never expressed your own beauty, so no one but you and your grave will know your beauty. The next sonnet I chose was Sonnet 11. Sonnet 11 starts out like this, ââ¬Å"As fast as thou shalt wane, so fast thou growââ¬â¢st, In one of thine, from that which thou departest; And that fresh blood which youngly thou bestowââ¬â¢st, Thou mayst call thine when thou from youth convertest.â⬠The start of this poem is saying, as fast as you will decline, you can also grow through one of your own children. The youth or DNA that you pass on to a child, is you as a young child. You call that child your own, because that was once you when you were younger. â⬠Herein lives wisdom, beauty, and increase; Without this, folly, age, and cold decay. If all were minded so, the times should cease, And threescore year would make the world away.â⬠Just like marriage, childbirth is about good judgement, beauty, and reproduction. Without them, you will only have foolishness, age, and the decay of death. If everyone was like you, the human race would end, and in sixty years there would be no more world. ââ¬Å"Let those whom nature hath not made for store, Harsh, featureless, and rude, barrenly perish. Look whom she best endowed, she gave the more, Which bounteous gift thou shouldst in bounty cherish.â⬠So let the people who arenââ¬â¢t good enough to preserve the rough, ugly, and poor people, die childless. Thing They Carried Essay Free Essays
Alexandra Berliner Eshoo English 12 11/28/11 Something A Soldier Ignores: Death Fatalities are part of every personââ¬â¢s life. To a normal citizen, death is often followed by sadness and grief. As portrayed in ââ¬Å"The Things They Carriedâ⬠by Tim Oââ¬â¢Brien, a soldier has to deal with the situation much differently. We will write a custom essay sample on Thing They Carried Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now Death is portrayed in a negative light due to the fact that soldiers are greatly fearful of it and that they are forced to be unaffected by death. In order to cope with all the deaths he witnessed, Oââ¬â¢Brien uses the retelling of war stories to heal from these traumatic events. Throughout the novel, death is definitely portrayed as being a very negative part of war. Because it is such a negative thing, death tends to instill fear in soldiers. From the beginning of the novel, death is truly portrayed as being a very negative risk that anyone at war deals with: ââ¬Å"Beyond all this, or at the very center, was the raw fact of terror. I did not want to die. Not everâ⬠(44). It is known that death could be the outcome of going to war, and many of these young soldiers do not want to die. Even though many soldiers end up going to war anyway, they are still fearful of death being a possible outcome for them. All of this fear and anxiety associated with war ultimately leads most people to view death in a negative light. It is definitely something that soldiers want to avoid, and even if they are not killed, death still has negative affects on them. In addition to death being portrayed in a negative light from the beginning of the novel, the soldiers are forced to be unaffected by death. As a result, it is seen how war changes people in a negative way. Once the war is all over, the negative affects are still present, and Oââ¬â¢Brien deals with them through retelling the past. It is seen that anyone that becomes involved in war eventually learns to be unaffected by death when one of the soldiersââ¬â¢ girlfriends comes to visit. She never leaves because she becomes fully invested in the war: ââ¬Å"She was dangerous. She was ready for the killâ⬠(116). When the girlfriend first came to the war site, she was innocent. Now, she has become part of the war and is ready to kill. One of the most obvious ways that she has changed is that now she can kill people easily and is unaffected by it. The fact that such an innocent woman can be changed so drastically by war shows the negative affects of being unaffected by death. It has become part of life for these soldiers, while most people would see death as a scary thing. Additionally, we see another soldier forced to conform to the guidelines of war in the witnessing of Kiowaââ¬â¢s death: ââ¬Å"The young soldier was trying hard not to cryâ⬠(170). This shows that, when first exposed to war, the soldiers are actually upset when they see another person die. This is a normal reaction that most people would have; yet, the others soldiers look down upon this person. When the young soldier is about to cry, they know that he is new to the experiences, and they just ignore him. The experienced soldiers do this because they know that every soldier just has to ignore death. It is just an unavoidable part of war. In war, death is dehumanized, and every soldier is forced to ignore it; yet, it still has lasting negative affects on the soldiers. Oââ¬â¢Brien reveals that he deals with the situation through the retelling of war stories. By revealing these stories, it allows Oââ¬â¢Brien, as well as the listener, to understand how exactly war works: ââ¬Å"By telling stories, you objectify your own experienceâ⬠¦You start sometimes with an incident that truly happened, like the night in the shit field, and you carry it forward by inventing incidents that did not in fact occur but that nonetheless help to clarify and explainâ⬠(160). This shows that all the bad experiences, including the thousands of deaths observed, are clarified through telling stories. Even if the stories are not totally accurate, bringing any part of the situation to light gives Oââ¬â¢Brien the closure he needs. It allows him to understand what went on in the war and be able to heal from it. Even though the soldiers are forced not react to death as a civilized human would, it still affects them internally, and the best way for Oââ¬â¢Brien to deal with the negativity of death is through talking about it. Death is something that every soldier has to deal with on a regular basis. Thousands of people are killed every day at war, and so, the soldiers are forced to ignore the emotions associated with death. They do not have the time to be upset in the midst of protecting our country. As a result, all of the witnessed death affect them internally and stay with them for many years after the war is over. In order to deal with the negative affects, it is seen that Oââ¬â¢Brien uses war stories as a way of healing. It allows him to understand what he experienced and move past it. Oroonoko's Slavery Problem: An Interpretation Aphra Behn's seventeenth century tale of a noble African prince's tragic fall to slavery, Oroonoko, has often been cited as a major antislavery work. Under close examination, however, Oroonoko tells a more complex story. The volatile cultural, moral, and religious crosscurrents that Behn finds surrounding her manifest themselves in the forms of narrative equivocality and intermittent satire in Oroonoko. Throughout the text, she seemingly possesses a conflicting attitude toward the slavery institution and racism in general. On one hand, her portrayal of the protagonist Oroonoko is just, heroic, and deeply sympathetic, and she often disparages European culture and religion while portraying Europeans themselves in an unfavorable light; however, Behn perhaps unconsciously reveals her deeply rooted cultural bias and racism, fictionalizes and romanticizes the lives of slaves on the plantations, and displays an apparent noncommittal attitude towards slavery. In selecting an African prince as her protagonist in a heroic romance, Behn not only makes an unconventional literary decision but also makes a statement on race. She shows that African Americans can be just as noble, virtuous, passionate, heroic, and just as worthy of literary praise and human compassion. Rarely before has an African American been portrayed in such a favorable light in British literature: . . . 'Twas amazing to imagine where 'twas he got that real greatness of soul, those refined notions of true honor, that absolute generosity . . . the highest passions of love and gallantry(2155); There [is] no one grace wanting that bears the standard of true beauty(2156). The manner of Oroonoko's death echoes that of tragic Christian martyrs and heroes in classic literature. His speeches compare to great leaders of antiquity, and the question he puts to his fellow slaves--Shall we render obedience to such a degenerate race, who have no one human virtue left to distinguish them fr om the vilest creatures?(2184)--is perhaps Behn's strongest statement against slavery. Her pen lavishes no less praise on Oroonoko's lover Imoinda, the brave, the beautiful, and the constant(2193). Through Oroonoko and Imoinda's suffering Behn highlights the excessive cruelty of the white man while underlining the honor and virtue of the lovers. She thus elevates two slaves to immortal status. She establishes what she has set out to do: to make [Oroonoko's] glorious name survive to all ages(2193). His name survives indeed, not as a common slave or even a mere prince, but an African American who serves as a sympathetic while revolutionary hero and a vehicle for Behn's indirect attack on the slavery institution and those who perpetrate it. In addition, Behn shows that she is not incapable of appreciating cultures different from her own while disparaging European society and its religion. She devotes many paragraphs to descriptions of the natives of Surinam whom she portrays as charming and novel(2153), innocent in their ways yet skilled in war and game. A philosophical libertine, Behn conveniently utilizes these natives, along with Oroonoko's virtues, to launch a raillery against European civilization, especially religion. The natives' nakedness, she claims, better instructs the world than all the inventions of man; religion would here but destroy that tranquility they possess by ignorance(2153). When the captain who captures Oroonoko as a slave refuses to release his shackles, Oroonoko replies that he [is] very sorry to hear that the captain [pretends] to the knowledge and worship of any gods who had taught him no better principles(2170). To his death Oroonoko refuses to accept Christianity. This is no surprise since Behn all but populates her story with dishonest, villainous Christians. There is the captain who abuses Oroonoko's trusty nature and sells him as a slave; there are the pursuants of Oroonoko who torture him in a most deplorable and inhumane manner(2187). Indeed, the most despicable character in the story is the European deputy governor: He [is] a fellow, Behn describes, whose character is not fit to be mentioned with the worst of the slaves(2186). He, too, lures Oroonoko back to captivity with cunning duplicity, and his men eventually kill Oroonoko with unimaginable cruelty. The governor's council has no sort of principles to make them worthy the name of men(2189). In addition, Behn comments on existing gender issues when she describes Europeans laughing at Mr. Trefry because

The Paradox of Assimilation Essay Example
The Paradox of Assimilation Essay Example The Paradox of Assimilation Essay The Paradox of Assimilation Essay The Paradox of Assimilation Assimilation both descriptively and prescriptively is a procedure of adjusting and acclimatizing to society. Normally thought to hold hurtful effects on society, assimilation can take to either the promotion or the complete and arrant deindividuation of it. This construct of assimilation by agencies of being a merchandise or a procedure is what fuses elements that are both matter-of-fact and ideological in modern twenty-four hours society. Simply put, assimilation is one of the largest paradoxes that is presently observed in society. A premier illustration of this paradox is displayed through the usage of covering in order to suit into society. Covering, which is the procedure of chanting down a disfavored individuality and exposing one more likely to be accepted socially, is an indispensable tool utilized by many ( Yoshino 552 ) . However, extended sums of assimilation through the procedure of covering can at times cause persons to cast their true individuality in favour of the fals e 1 that they have been showing. Despite this, the most effectual manner for society to progress is through assimilation. The homogenizing procedure that is assimilation causes persons to set aside their ain values, individuality, and regular inclinations, in order to take on, act, and adapt to the behaviour of the group in which they wish to be accepted into. In Ariel Levyââ¬â¢s Female Chauvinist Pigs, Sheila Nevins, a celebrated executive manufacturer states Everyone has to knock and crunch for what they want ( Levy 267 ) . Simply put, there is no success without forfeit. Despite their outer visual aspects those who want to last, accomplish illustriousness or claim success are willing to do the forfeits required in order to persist towards their ultimate end. Even Witterickââ¬â¢s household in their changeless conflict against gender assimilation found that while in Cuba in order to endeavor towards their end of rejecting the social gender norms, they had to accept the one thing they despised ( Poisson 366 ) . Identities are meant to be based on a complex composing of different sorts of lines and forms that intertwine into their environing systems, each of which on their ain would be homogenous ( civilization, household, friends, and media ) . Despite the fact that these lines and forms follow different waies, when they are processed together through assimilation at the right times the instabilities become sorted out in a manner which consequences in the creative activity of alone individualities in society. Assimilation when used responsibly is a tool best utilised for the promotion of society. However, many persons fear assimilation missing the cognition that it can happen without the arrant devastation of oneââ¬â¢s individualism. Oneââ¬â¢s individualism, or their individuality has many influences and divisions. These influences involve merely about anything that has to make with beliefs, traditions, symbols, behaviours, values aÃâ â⬠¹aÃâ â⬠¹or even pride hoarded within oneââ¬â¢s ego or shared by members of their peculiar bomber society. The downside of assimilation is that many do non put to death the act decently. Society implies that persons have engagement in it as full members with alone positions and sentiments. Oneââ¬â¢s changeless interaction with others, leads to impute significances to people, objects or events in the surrounding environment. In Yoshinoââ¬â¢s The New Civil Rights states that the commitment is to assist people be themselves to defy d emands to conform that take away their ability to be the persons they are ( Yoshino 557 ) . Though this may be interpreted as assimilation through covering denies persons the right to be who they are in world it shows that, in order to accomplish the success of society in a positive mode, the promotion of persons with their uniqueness spared must come foremost. The mode in which they achieve this whether theyââ¬â¢re utilizing their heads to make it or their tits ( Levy 269 ) is irrelevant as both require some grade of assimilation. The procedure of deindividuation is an ageless cringle of absorbing and losing a sense of oneââ¬â¢s self-identity. This does non intend that conforming or sharing the same traits with other persons deprives oneââ¬â¢s ain sense of individualism. Assimilation is the measure that allows persons to be accepted into their sub social civilization and begins the true procedure of organizing their ain individualism. Which in bend allows them to further the sense of belonging to their cultural group. This feeling helps, despite single differences, members to hold something in common. That same common feeling can besides be demonstrated by sing other sub social groups that may non portion the same traits. By sing differing groups, a group can be identified as alone and can be viewed so exactly because it presents expressed and important differences which facilitates the being of these different groups which influences society as a whole. By concealing the individuality of Storm and letin g him to be a testimonial to freedom and pick in topographic point of limitation ( Poisson 365 ) . The Wittericks let storm to hold a trait that will be merely be shared by a choice few. This trait of being free and being able to do his ain picks seems to be merely shared within his household but subsequently on in life it will be communal by others that were given the same freedoms as a kid. However, if Storm neer learns to absorb to his sub social group, it is likely he will be shunned by them and out casted by others who do non portion the same traits as him. This shows that being deemed mainstream is still frequently a necessity of societal life ( Yoshino 552 ) . What is considered mainstream in one group may non be mainstream in another. However it is these baby stairss that allow the advancement of society to go on processing frontward. Groups that are a consequence of assimilation many times portion common values and features frequently influence oneââ¬â¢s individualism in a manner that wishes to be accepted and recognized as a member of that common individuality. Competency-based job analysis and the advantages and disadvantages of Assignment
Competency-based job analysis and the advantages and disadvantages of its use in team-based jobs - Assignment Example This paper demonstrates a critical review of literatures on competency-based job analysis and on merits and demerits of its use in team-based jobs. In management perspective, human capital represents commercially valuable talents, knowledge, experience and skills (Marcus, Ippolito and Zhang, 1998, p. 490). In order to ensure constant improvement in performance, most companies facilitated some techniques such as team-work, organizational learning, knowledge-sharing, training and development programs etc that can foster employeesââ¬â¢ skills and abilities to perform better. In recent years, many companies have arranged an integrated system in which there is best possible fit of human resources and technical system that together produce superior employee performance (Noe, Hollenbeck and Gerhert, 2003). Recent changes in HR strategies and management initiatives prove that assessing and improving employeesââ¬â¢ performance has become at the very heart of human resource management. In management, competency is a trait or a characteristic that an employee requires to perform his task. Competency is defined as a demonstrable characteristic such as knowledge, skills, behaviours etc that enable a person perform well (Byars and Rue, 2008, p.267). A competent employee is very likely to exhibit certain basic characteristics that are related to criterion referenced as effective as well as superior in terms of performance in a given job (Priyadarshini and Dave, 2012, p. 196). Competency based performance management is a system to consider skills and behaviours of employees for successful performance in the present and future job roles. It not only helps employees to understand job expectations, but also the management to design a framework for aligning employeesââ¬â¢ job performance with organizational goals (David et al, 2000, p. 6). Kandula (2013, p. 289) stressed that competency-based performance
